King George VI Chase
Kempton boxing day...
The King George VI Chase is rated one of the most prestigious
steeple chase events of the National Hunt season and is raced
over 3 miles. The race was first run in 1937 and many great
horses have won the King George VI Chase over the years. There
is less emphasis on stamina so some of the top two milers often
take their chance.
The most well known of all the winners would be Desert Orchid
who became virtually everyone’s banker when it came to King
George and managed to win the race four times. Desert Orchid
also won the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Whitbread Gold Cup and Irish
Grand National.
Others that have managed to win the race on more than one
occasion are Wayward Lad (3 wins), The Fellow, One Man, Silver
Buck and Pendil with two wins a piece.
