Best Horse
What makes it the best...
A question I have been asked on a number of occasions and one
which is not easy to answer. It will depend on a number of
things and the first is, best at what?
Deciding which the best horse is is not easy, it could be
said Red Rum was the best horse because of the three Grand
National wins. But although the national is a well loved race
and watched by millions every year it’s still a handicap race.
Some may argue that the Cheltenham Gold Cup produces the best
horse and this may also be true, but only if you are looking at
staying races. There are plenty of excellent horses that race at
shorter distances and just because they only race over hurdles
does not mean they can’t be the best.
Then there is flat racing and the Group One winning horses.
Is a horse that wins a Group One race better than a winner of a
handicap race? Most would answer yes but try telling that to the
owner who has just won a handicap race at Royal Ascot.
